New shops open doors in Village of East Davenport

One of the most historic and widely recognized storefronts in the Village of East Davenport is back in business.

The original Isabel Bloom store on Mound Street between 11th and 12th streets is to open Saturday as a gift and home-decor shop. It is an expansion of Just Because in Muscatine, where it has operated for 14 years.

"A tavern for women": Past and present downtown come together

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Bev Thumann, 74, has fond memories of downtown. From a Second Street apartment window in 1950s Davenport, she and her grandmother watched people walking down the street to the drug store, the movies or the cigar shop.

“It didn’t cost anything,” she said. “We would sit in the window and we would watch the families waiting for the bus, we’d see the kids go around the poles and it was just a good feeling. The kids were having a good time [and] we were having a good time.”

Owner Bev Thumann credits divine intervention with her decision to sign a lease and invest big in the Village.

“I’m a Christian woman, and this is how it went down: I lost my husband last year, and I went to the cemetery after church. It was Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5),” she said Thursday as she unpacked the last bit of merchandise before her grand opening. “Afterwards, instead of turning right to go home, I turned left, and I ended up here.

“I saw the (For Rent) sign, and I called John (Wisor, owner). God was driving my bus.”

Thumann and her grandmother didn’t have much, and people-watching was something they could do together.

“It was the glue that kind of held grandma and me together,” she said.

Years later, long after her grandmother passed, Thumann would take an entirely new role in the fabric of a downtown: she would become the owner of the gift shop Just Because, first in Blue Grass and then in Muscatine.
